Carpenter Ants

While Carpenter Ants aren’t hugely popular in Riverside and San Diego County they do pop up and when they do…

You defiantly don’t want to have a problem with them.

They can cause extensive damage to a structure and trees.

Carpenter Ants do not eat wood- they evacuate wood, smoothing out tunnels inside. They use these chewed out tunnels for nesting. The black carpenter ants can contain a colony of up to 50,000 individuals or more.

In Southern California swarmers are active from February till June.

Carpenter Ants Appearance

While carpenter ants are mainly black they can also be red, or a combination of red and brown. They average a size of 5/8”, oval in shape with 6 legs and have antennas. Carpenter ants can easily be confused with many other types of ants and may need a pest control professional to identify.

Signs of a Carpenter Ant Infestation

A way to tell if you have a Carpenter Ant problem is small wholes at the woods surface. The Carpenter ants will push out debris that consists of sawdust like shavings, and insulation. They favor dead damp wood, and will not just destroy wood structures, but will hollow out trees as well. If you find that you have small wholes at woods surface and piles of debris that have accumulated under them it is a good indication that you have a Carpenter Ant Infestation and should call in a professional for treatment.

Conclusion

A combination of tiny wholes at a wood surface and an accumulation of sawdust like debris under them is an indication of an active Carpenter Ant Infestation. They not only push out wood debris but also insulation, and hollow out trees. This can be a threat to the safety of your home and loved ones. Hollowing out a tree can cause it to be fragile, leading to collapse. Calling a Pest Control Professional in your area at first sign of infestation is recommended. Even if you are not sure whether or not you have Carpenter Ants. Chances are if you see tiny wholes, any type of wood debris, or ants, there is a pest problem to deal with. Don’t compromise the integrity of a structure, you could have Carpenter Ants or Termites on your hands. Both Carpenter Ants and Termites can destroy a structure if left untreated.
