Summer Ant Control Tips

Megan Pinneo

We can all agree that ants are a real nuisance this time of year as the temperatures heat up and colonies underground start feelin' the burn. Many ants will turn to the comfort of your own home to seek out food and moisture. Aside from keeping your trusty pest control company on speed dial during these summer months, here are some big helpful tips to keep the those little pests away!

First and foremost, after a pest control visit, ant activity may seem to get worse before it gets better. This is because if bait was used, the ants need time to carry the 'food' back to their colony in order to share, and this will be much more effective when wiping out the entire colony preventing future visitors of this particular colony. While it may be *extremely* difficult to avoid intervening with the invasion during this time, (DO NOT use your own Raid or pesticide to wipe them up right away) you need to let the bait work it's magic. After allowing the bait to be carried back by the ants over-night, carefully wipe down the counter with Windex the next day, which will remove any and all pheromones that the ants left behind so they won't be able to return. By this point, the colony should be wiped out and you can give yourself a congratulatory pat on the back!

As you already know, ants are serious scavengers. It always helps stay ahead of an ant invasion by keeping crumbs swept up and pet kibble stored securely. We always advise buying plastic containers to store pet kibble so ants aren't attracted to the dry food. (Fun Fact: This will also double in preventing a rodent problem as well!) If you feed your pets outdoors and leave a bowl of kibble for them to graze on through out the day, we advise placing the food dish within a shallow bowl of water. This creates a moat around the food dish, making it impossible for ants to access the dry food within. We suspect that your pet will encounter less unwelcome guests to his or her dining experience when this method is used.

In closing, if you have regular pest control service, just know that you have unlimited call backs in between services for reasons like ant invasions. We understand that regardless of taking ALL the preventative measures out there to avoid unwelcome pests, they can and will pop up every now and again. Please know that you are NEVER bothering us by requesting a callback visit, because will do whatever it takes to make sure you are living in a comfortable, pest-controlled environment.

A Bed Bug Free Holiday Season

Megan Pinneo

It's officially November which means that it's officially the holiday season! As you already know, this is the time where travel becomes a lot more frequent and you may find yourself staying in hotels or even guest bedrooms as you visit friends and family for the holidays.

A good rule of thumb when settling in to wherever you are staying it that bed bugs can essentially hide anywhere. Contrary to popular belief, bed bugs are not limited to just beds. Meaning, they can hide in couches, luggage, behind picture frames, in closets, in purses, or even coat racks. Wherever people are, bed bugs can hitch a ride and find a new victim to feed on, which makes hotels a perfect place for this. *Cue look of disgust*

Bed bugs are parasitic insects that feed on blood. The Cimex Lectularius, which is the most common among bed bugs, prefers to feed on the blood of humans. (Kinda like vampires...gross!) You can always tell you have a bed bug problem from the tell tale signs:

  1. Rusty or reddish stains on bed sheets or mattresses caused by bed bugs being crushed.
  2. Dark spots (about this size: • ...)
  3. Eggs and eggshells, which are tiny (about 1mm) and pale yellow skins that nymphs shed as they grow larger.
  4. Live bed bugs.

If you are unfamiliar with what live bed bugs may look like, they are flat, reddish-brown, oval insects up to 4 to 5 mm long or the size of an apple seed. After a meal, they typically swell up and become more of a reddish color.

Bed bugs are tenacious little buggers (pun intended) because they are constantly moving from one victim to another and are pros at hiding. One way that we can eradicate a bed bug problem is using the thermal heat treating method to kill off the mature adults but also the eggs that they've laid, preventing them from spreading.

Our advise to have a bed bug free holiday season?

1. Always do a thorough inspection of the bed by pulling back the sheets and observing the mattress seams.
2. Do a brief inspection of the baseboards, outlets and picture frames remembering to inspect the curtains or drapes.
3. After traveling, never place your luggage on your bed. Always unpack your luggage in the garage or laundry room and do laundry right away to avoid any bed bugs from spreading, preferably with the hottest water setting possible.
4 . Call Black Knight for a free bed bug pest inspection so we can prevent an infestation from spreading.

Happy Holidaying!

Supporting the Community

Megan Pinneo

Black Knight Termite and Pest Control often contributes a helping hand to the community in many different ways. We took this recent opportunity to help feed the hungry in part with Southwest Riverside Association of Realtors in "Heart for Hunger." Throughout the month of February can goods were collected at several Estate offices around the community and on March 1st it all came together. The amount of food collected was amazing! All the food that was collected is then distributed to food pantries throughout Southwest Riverside County.

Earwigs aka "Pincer Bugs"

Megan Pinneo

Latin Name - Order Dermaptera

Let's start off with some Facts you may not know about those Pesky Picners Bugs.

  • Pincers are often called "forceps" and are used for defense, they rarely bite humans.
  • Light attracts Earwigs, and can become a nuisance on your porch.
  • Males tend to have larger more developed Pincers.
  • These pests eat plants and insects.
  • Weather changes can cause Earwigs to move inside your home.
  • Earwigs are mostly found in your home where there is water but overall can be found in any room and any part of your home for that matter.
  • Earwigs often enter homes through gaps in the foundations and poorly sealed windows.

While Professional Pest Control Service will dramatically help with an infestation of Earwigs there are several things that can be done in and around your home to help keep them away for good.

  • Shining a light into your yard off of your home can help direct Earwigs away.
  • Eliminating their hiding spots in and around your home will help in riding your home of them.
  • Sealing any and all open spaces in your home will help keep them out.
  • Keep your garage clear of damp or wet boxes, these pests can often be found hiding in them.
  • Check outside plants before bringing them in for watering.
  • Reduce moisture in and around your home.
  • Remove any decaying vegetation you may have in your yard.

At Black Knight we are always available to help answer any further questions you may have regarding Earwigs or any pest that may be "bugging" you.
