Faced With A Flea Problem

Warm weather causes fleas to mature faster calling for flea abundance this summer!

The warm weather of summer brings an explosion of flea activity both indoors and outdoors. Fleas see your carpet, bedding rugs etc., as a potential breeding ground, and pray on you or your pet as its host. Pets easily bring in fleas from the outdoors, simply from the walks they take. A fleas life cycle happens faster in the summer, if pets are not treated regularly fleas from previous infestations will survive on pets, and will begin to lay hundreds of eggs. Fleas are no joy to have to humans or to pets, some can even carry infectious diseases, like Bartonella.

Bartonella, (Cat scratch disease) occurs when a person gets scratched by a kitten or feral cat. It is mostly seen in children under the age of 15 years old. Cats can be infected when a flea carries Bartonella bacteria. Also, it may be shown that CSD can be spread directly to people by the bite of infected cat fleas. (This is yet to be proven.)

Fleas are definitely a pest that you do not want in your home or on your pets. There are some flea prevention tips that you can practice at home and on your pets this summer.

Flea Prevention Tips for Home and Pets

  • VACUUM!!! And do it often. Empty bag after each use.

  • Shake out and wash rugs frequently.

  • Wash bedding frequently and with hot water.

  • Treat pets for fleas all year long. Hand in hand with regular flea checks.

  • Groom pests regularly. Bathe them often.

  • Clean up yard. Fleas prefer warm, moist, shaded areas. Rake leaves and clear brush.

  • Keep grass trimmed.

  • Call a professional when you have a flea infestation.

Black Knight Flea Control for Indoor Environments

Black Knight Pest Control offers a Flea Control Service to its customers, this plan will clear your home of fleas!

There is a four step plan that Black Knight follows in Flea Control:

  1. In the first step Black Knight Pest Control recommends that before any treatment the homeowner will vacuum their carpet to help remove some of the adult fleas that are in the carpet.

  2. Second, a product will be used to kill the remaining adult fleas and also stop the development of eggs and larvae. This product contains both Adulticide and Insect Growth Regulator. There is also a natural, or non toxic solution that is offered!

  3. Next, the homeowner is advised to wash all bedding.

  4. Lastly there is a flea product that is recommended for your pet. The once a month topical products seem to work the best. Checking with your veterinarian is always advised.

    Jumping to a Conclusion

Fleas can be difficult to get rid of once they are on your pet and in your home. It takes time and effort to get rid of the infestation as well as preventing them from coming back. There are many tips in flea control and prevention, but in the end seeking the help of a professional pest control technician is highly recommended. A professional can help to insure the eradication of fleas, and advice on what to after they are gone so that they don’t return.
